According to wikipedia’s definition -“a shoe is an item of footwear intended to protect and comfort the human foot while doing various activities”. But shoes can also be used as an item of decoration and I personally select many of my shoes from this point of view. Particularly, shoes I wear to special events, like weddings, receptions, balls.
Originally shoes were bound to its functionality. Through time and cultural aspects, the shoes design has changed tremendously. In the beginning, shoes were made by hand, had to last and quality was of great importance. It seems that the Egyptians were the first to invent footwear. There was no difference between the right and left shoe, they were made exactly the same.
The modern times brought with it industrialisation and mass production of shoes but also a multitude of different modern shoes design, material and categories. Additionally, fashion has often dictated many modern shoes design elements, such as whether shoes have very high heels or flat ones. Modern footwear varies widely in style, complexity and cost.
